I was in a tiny room in
Philadelphia
and I pulled down all the
shades
and went to bed
and pulled up the
covers.
there was no telephone.
there were no Christmas cards.
there was no family.
there were no gifts
and I believe that I felt better
than anybody in that
city
and almost anybody
in any of the
cities.
and I celebrated New Year’s
Eve in the same
manner.
Schreiner47 was initially occupied on 29 December 1989 by a dozen people who knew each other from the non-conformist opposition movement in the GDR or were active in the Kirche von Unten, among others. One of them was Silvio Meier, who was murdered by neo-Nazis at the nearby underground station in November 1992. Since then, there have been annual anti-fascist demonstrations in his memory. In the ‘Villa Felix’, as the house was later called, there is, among other things, self-managed Clubrooms. Since 2003, the Schreiner has been owned by a co-operative and thus successfully taken off the rental market. It makes sense to squat!
